Never be afraid to refuse entry to anyone into your home if you feel unsure about them in anyway at all.
Even if they have identity and give you a business card with their telephone numbers on there, do not call the number on the card to verify their authenticity as it could well be one of their accomplices you’re calling, remember, it’s all about your personal safety.
Always have a list of all of utility companies telephone numbers to hand i.e. water, electric, gas, council and ALWAYS call their numbers direct.
If you’re living by yourself or elderly and nervous, always lock your back door before you open the front door as it has been known for someone to keep you occupied at the front door while their accomplice gains entry via the back door.
Never agree to give anyone cash on your doorstep, sign anything and under no circumstances should you go to a cash machine and withdraw money!
Also do not ever feel pressured into signing anything at the door, remember, this is your property and you have every right to defend it and yourself.
If you feel unsure about anyone, ask them to come back at a later date when you know you will have company and if they make you feel really uncomfortable do not hesitate to close and lock your door and call the police immediately!
Reputable tradesmen and genuine workers will have no problems with you taking these precautions so please do bear that in mind when protecting yourself and your property.
