Creating the perfect Work-Life-Balance
The costs to business of ill-health and stress, especially in terms of absenteeism and low productivity, are huge. Recent research in the international retail sector, for example, calculates that one in every ten hours of working time are lost to unplanned time off.
Even at today’s levels of care responsibilities, UK businesses could save £4.8 billion every year by better supporting staff carers and thereby avoiding unplanned absences.
In any one year, over one in four people in the general population and one in six workers is likely to be suffering from a mental health condition. With over 31 million people in work in the UK, this is equivalent to over five million workers who could be suffering from a mental health condition each year.
The logic is sound: our working environments affect our physical and mental wellbeing;
“Today, everyone asks staff about job satisfaction. In the future, we could see organisations measuring life satisfaction. Making staff feel genuinely better about life requires creating jobs with meaning, flexibility and autonomy,”
Another wellbeing issue that is set to spike in the future is the number of employees with caring responsibilities outside work. Currently, around one in seven UK citizens are juggling work with caring for a family member or friend. As the population ages, so will this phenomenon of employee-carers.
Wellbeing Programs Can Decrease Absenteeism
There have been many studies that have looked at the connections between worksite wellbeing programs and reduced absenteeism. Companies who have introduced wellbeing programs have shown reduced absenteeism for a variety of reasons:
Employees with good health behaviors have lower absenteeism
Employees who can control their stress have lower absenteeism
Employees with healthy blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose have lower absenteeism.
Employees who are not overweight or obese have lower absenteeism
Wellbeing Programs Reduce Elevated Health Risks
The foundation of any good wellbeing program must be focused on helping employees adopt healthy behaviours. Elevated blood glucose, high blood cholesterol, and high blood pressure are almost all caused by unhealthy diets and lack of physical activity. Eating and exercising are behaviours, and as all behviours are simply a learned pattern, it’s simply a case of teaching people a healthier pattern to learn and follow.
It’s also astonishing to know that in as little as six weeks health risks could improve dramatically, and it’s been shown that those who maintain healthy behaviors experience lower health risks for six weeks, six months, 12 months, and even 18 months if they stick to what they’ve learned and adopt it a positive healthy lifestyle..
What if I could show you a way to enjoy your food and eat guilt free – would you be interested?
When you know what you are eating you can make better decisions. All too often we kid ourselves; that fruit and nut bar counts as one of your 5-a-day as it has fruit in. That healthy glass of fruit juice that we know deep down is just a glass of liquid sugar, that glass of wine that also counts as one of your 5-a-day fruits… and other little lies we kid ourselves with.
There is so much information out there concerning healthy eating, lifestyle and nutrition and with a recent government study showing that the average women by the time she reaches age 45, has been on 61 diets and that very first diet starts at the tender age of 6 years old!
It’s no wonder that people today are confused on what is healthy and what’s not.
