Farmers walks, the best fat burning and fitness exercise?

August 10, 2011 //  by Garth//  Leave a Comment

So many people get hung up on just trying to work certain body parts i.e. waist or the dreaded bingo wings in the vain hope that by constantly pumping away at them they will see significant changes and be able to change their body shapes.

Unfortunately that isn’t the case as we should all know by now that you can’t “spot reduce” a body part no matter how hard you try and in many cases people just give up and put it down to “life’s lot” when all is needed is a more thoughtful approach to training your entire body and then add the “shaping  exercises” as I like to call them to tone and achieve the body shape and effects you want.

Working the body as a entire unit not only gives you a greater calorie burn which will in turn make your entire body leaner but will also bring greater physical fitness in the process and contribute to your growing feelings of confidence and self esteem as you start to look, see and feel better about yourself.

There are literally hundreds of exercises you can do for your entire body but in this article I’m going to give you a really simple exercise to do three or four times a week and will work multiple muscle groups and it goes by the very strange name of “farmers walks”.

Basically all it involves is picking up two heavy weights i.e. dumbbells or a couple of shopping bags, or whatever you have to hand that is quite heavy (a small child will do) and then walking a set distance with them.

Try to walk for 2 x minutes none stop while carrying the weight, rest for 30 x seconds then repeat five more times, or walk for 20 metres, rest 30 x seconds then repeat again five more times.

You’ll find that as you start to walk your upper body and trunk have to act as stabilizers to stop the weight from moving around which makes your muscles work overtime.

Picking something heavy up off the floor and walking with it for time or distance will work nearly every muscle in the body including your heart and the calorie burn will torch the fat from your body.

If you don’t believe me, try it!

Best wishes Garth.
